My wife and I just bought a house and inherited out of control Caragana, 12-15 feet high and almost as wide at the base. It is a great privacy hedge that needs to come back under control. If we prune as narrow (6 ft at base) & short (6-8 ft) and we would like to, we are worried that we will only have the larger centre stumps left with no leaves. I hear that you can't kill Caragana, but I certainly don't want to overprune and lose a summer of privacy! Before I hit this with the chainsaw and reclaim our yard (and the neighbours) I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice.

Caragana can take hard pruning, but I would wait till spring. I have cut 12 footers to ground level and have had them come back full force. In your zone I dont know if I would trust fresh cut wounds to the harsh elements of winter. One note, I have also heard you cant kill Caragana... but have learned anything living can be killed
