I am hoping someone can help with my very sad tree. This is a grafted standard form of a French Lilac. I do not know what kind of tree forms the trunk and roots. It bloomed and grew gorgeously for 7 years.

Last summer I noticed many wasps feeding on sticky sap on the trunk. Branches started to die back and the trunk looks very diseased. Only one branch bloomed this Spring. The whole tree looks sad and dying. The trunk is flaking off and whole branches are dead. It is in a sunny position and has been well watered. I am hoping it be saved.

I tried insect spray on the trunk last summer but feel that until I know what it is it is hard to treat.

Many thanks for your input.

It sounds like it could be lilac borers killing your plant. Borers are difficult to treat. First I would prune out all the dead wood and burn or dispose of it off site to prevent spreading them. Look for entry holes or very fine sawdust on the canes. Sometimes you can use a wire to kill the borer if it is relatively new and close to the entry hole. Use a systemic insecticide to kill the borers before they kill the plant.

Hi Terry and thank you. I have lifted the the bark a bit where it is peeling and there were the tell-a - tale round holes. Not sure I can save it but I will give it a try.

Thanks for you reply. I found more info here: http://www.umanitoba.ca/afs/hort_inquiries/deciduous_ornamentals/lilac_borer.html
