I will try this again - any idea what could be eating the leaves off my roses??? They first look sickly and then are gone - bugs not seen - any ideas? Any prevention??

Kathaleen. I think, the problem what you have can be split three ways. You have a tiny green caterpilar on the underside of your leaves. You have leaf cutting Wasps/Bees doing the damage. Or you have leaf cutting ants in and around your rose bushes.

I will keep a better look out for caterpillars - would they be very hard to detect??? I don't believe it's bees or wasps, they aren't really that plentiful - so I will be on the lookout for possible ants or catepillars....even though I have yet to find any physical evidence of bugs on the roses. Do you know what the solution to ridding of either of these pests would be???

Kathaleen. Ants you can only kill around plants by placing those little anttrap containers around your plants. The safest way to kill caterpilars is spraying your plants with BTK (Bacillus turingiensis kurstaki)which kills caterpilars. The caterpilars on the plants might be very tiny and green so they blend in with the foliage.

When caterpillars are to blame the leaves don't first look sickly - they just disappear! And the caterpillars aren't that hard to spot. Sickly sounds more like disease or fungus. Take a sick leaf to a garden centre.

I think I have found the culprit - it looks like a catepillar is to blame - whiel the climbing rose looks generally healthy - it appears that numerous leaves are curled up with a varmit inside....so tomorrow out comes the step ladder and more plucking. Any ideas on what I can do preventively to rid the plant for further years??? Also some non- catepillar leaves do have a few black spots on them.....do I have 2 seperate problems and any ideas on how to make this plant happier????
