this is what I just received with regards to this wonderful garden series...

'I come writing with unfortunate news. We have just received word that HGTV has decided not to renew our series "Recreating Eden" for a third season. We were informed that although our ratings are good, we will no longer fit into the HGTV format. We are still actively pursuing international broadcasters for the series.

On behalf of Merit Motion Pictures and Eden Entertainment, I want to thank you for your support of this wonderful series and we hope you will to continue to enjoy the remainder of our second season.'

no longer fit within the HGTV format?? does this mean that because there are no fixer uppers, or amazing kitchen transformations, or no one dueling it out with each others home, that it just doesn't make the mark? What is HGTV coming to...I think we have about three garden shows left on HGTV to watch now - but perhaps they are re runs...I don't know about you but I am getting a bit bored with the lack of good garden shows on this station...Donna

I'm in agreement, Donna. There used to be such good gardening shows..."Spring" is the only other new one that I've found. Thank goodness it's a gem! Weren't there supposed to be new episodes of "Gardener's Journal" and "Bugs and Blooms"? Maybe I'm not watching at the right time, but I haven't found them. (It's hard to stay up until 3am, and I can't tape every night in the hopes that something will be worth watching!)

I e-mailed HGTV about this very topic several weeks ago. They answered back (with a what seemed like a form letter) saying that they were thrilled with the lineup of garden shows. Glad they are, because this viewer isn't. Sheesh!!

I can't believe this. Donna you are so right about the fixer uppers or amazing kitchen transformations. I was wondering where all the "new" gardening shows were for this season. I have emailed them in the past asking about the reruns from 5 years ago. I'm getting tried of paying a premium price for "additional" cable and not getting anything more. Now they show the same program on 4 different channels instead of one. Think I'll email them again and express my dissatifaction.

hi dawn, if you have an email address that got through to someone at HGTC before, how about sharing that email so others can express their concern as well. Maybe you will start something!

So I'm not the only one searching for gardening shows to satisfy my couch time craving!

H "G" TV does seem more and more misnamed...home renos one after another, while the supposedly most popular hobby in America (?--isn't gardening that, statistically?) gets almost no programs.

Like Tom, I'd like to have an email address to give my 3 cents worth.

If I can get a proper email, I will put this in the next newsletter which is the May issue and send it out. It would be a great idea if all of you would then send an email to them...then perhaps they might see that there are people out there that want to have garden shows that are not re runs. Gardening is huge but you would never know it by the shows that are on now.

I've been setting my VCR up to tape HGTV's few gardening shows each night and have been wondering what the heck was going on with their goofy scheduling and their lack of shows. As you say, you wouldn't know that gardening was the most popular pasttime by their schedule. I would even be happy to have more American programs if the problem is with poor Canadian offerings. I would be happy to add my name to the growing list of disgruntled HGTV customers.

I went looking for all those great garden shows lately - in Calgary they are all on between about 3 and 6 am! Except 'Spring' runs on Sat about 5pm I think. I sent an email to HGTV to tell them what I thought -no answer yet . Maybe they think there are no gardeners in Western Canada!

Sorry Tom. I haven't check in for a while and just noticed your request. I sent an email to feedback@hgtv.ca and here's the reply I received from Amy Lane, Communications Coordinator for HGTV on May 19.

Thank you for your interest in Home & Garden Television. We regret you are disappointed in our gardening lineup. We listened to viewers who wanted a gardening presence year-round on HGTV and so created a gardening block that airs every morning from 5 to 7 a.m. ET (and weekends until 8 a.m. ET). For some viewers, this is a great way to begin their day and for others, an opportunity to tape a block of programming at the same time each day to enjoy at their preferred time.

We launched our spring schedule the week of April 5 that includes more gardening programming in Prime Time, including the addition of a brand-new series, Spring (Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET), as well as other returning programs, including Recreating Eden and Secret World of Gardens (Sundays starting at 7 p.m. ET). We are also airing Mark Cullen Gardening at 10:30 p.m. on Saturdays and a handful of other gardening series throughout the week, including Landscaper's Challenge and Ground Force.

Throughout the summer, we will also be airing new episodes of One Garden, Two Looks, Bugs and Blooms, Flower Power and Gardener's Journal. We really hope you will be able to enjoy this new schedule.

I responded with another email on May 19 of: The shows between 5 and 7 a.m. are repeats, are they not? Same with Secret World of Gardens, Landscapers Challenge and Mark Cullen? Why would I want to continue paying for shows that have been on for the past 4-5 years?

I have not received any response since then.

Donna, you are so right about gardening being huge. I just read some stat the other day that gardening is a multi-billion dollar industry in Canada....yes billion, not million.

thanks for following up with HGTV - i think i will suggest to donna that she publishes the above email in the june newsletter in the hopes that many voices will help HGTV understand the demand..

as to the size of market, in Canada alone the gardening industry is over 4 Billion - in the US it is approching 50 Billion - yes the BIG B --

maybe its time we suggest that this industry start supporting the programming -- look at how much the golfing industry spends on events and promotion....

do i hear a ground swell growing?? :}

I thought I was the only one that had seen all of HGTV's shows 5 or more times. I've emailed them in the past asking why they do not have any new Gardener's Journal or the other show Kathy did a few years ago. We all need to voice our opinion that their lineup is not satisfying to us, the viewer.

I wonder if it would help to cc a copy to the CRTC? This is the 3rd time in the past 3 years that I've emailed and/or called HGTV to complain about reruns and lack of new shows. I don't have the number handy but I know when I called Shaw they were able to give me HGTV's 1-800 number.

Tom, I like your idea of the industry supporting the programming. I don't know how one would get that going though. Maybe we need to write letters to the "major hort players" asking them to support the gardening shows. Any idea on who these major players are?

dawn - i like your idea about writing the crtc - if you can find an email address it might prompt more gardeners to get involved... there is a lot of power in multiplied voices :}

There's actually a form that you can fill out on their website at http://www.crtc.gc.ca/RapidsCCM/Register.asp?lang=E

Hello! I'm new here, but maybe it's because we're not sitting in front of the TV - we're out enjoying our gardens! But I agree with you about lack of garden shows on HGTV. I'm a novice gardener and could really benefit from some informative gardening programming. I just found you and am really excited that I have a place to go (besides calling my mom!) with my gardening questions. Thanks from Texas!

I too wrote to HGTV and received the identical response as Dawn (earlier in this thread.) Two members of the Calgary Hort Society said they also rec'd the same message! Do they even read our letters?

they may not read one or two, but if they were inundated they would definitely have to listen...

maybe if we could get lots of gardeners expressing their concern :}

just a thought

Interesting reading that there are so many others feeling the same as I. I, too, sent an e-mail complaining about the re-runs, asking about new episodes of Gardeners Journal (which is my absolute favourite). I also told them how annoyed I was that the gardening shows have been moved to early mornings ... I have to remember to tape each night (only to find out that it's a re-run). Did anyone get an answer about new Gardeners Journal episodes?

So far I haven't rec'd an answer form HGTV.

Please add my name to the list of unhappy HGTV viewers! I have never received a response from HGTV in my garden show questions. I know how to 1-clean my house 2-organize my house 3-sell my house 4-paint my house ...etc. How many shows can be produced on how to clean and sell a house?? And why so many from Britain?? Ready to cancel HGTV!!

If I change proramming on my dish I will not get HGTV unless they change their content.I have emailed HGTV several times about my dissatisfaction with their lack of gardening shows. Got typical form response. I also sent email asking when the new Gardener's Journal shows will be on. I also asked why the gardening shows were on so early in the morning. Asked the what the G stood for, 99% of their shows were about home and not gardening. No answer yet!

HGTV - It is a shame that "Recreating Eden" was cancelled, as it really was an excellent idea and a boon to keen gardeners, of whom there are more and more, if statistics are to be believed. The proof is in the wider selection of plants and varieties available, as well as number of retail outlets. HGTV seems to have less and less "G" content - where are the gardens? Many thanks, Maureen McIlwain St Andrews NB

Oops - forgot to say in my previous post that I sent my request for more garden content on HGTV to the channel, as well as to the CRTC - thanks for the links, Dawn. The more we speak up... who knows?

I am also disappointed in the lack of garden shows! It seems the station has totally forgotten that the garden is an extension of the home! RR

I'm a new convert to gardening, discovering exciting things that I knew nothing about like organic gardening, xeriscaping, greenscaping, etc., as I fumble my way into this lifestyle. I also don't have cable television, but view the odd gardening program on my in-laws television when we visit. The thought occurs, isn't there a specialty channel for just about everything under the sun now? Maybe someone with the background, vision, and expertise, should start a CLGTV channel (Canadian Landscape and Garden TV) or something similar? Some of the home shows are mildly interesting, but the thought occurs that part of their rationale, given the sponsors, is to encourage dissatisfaction with one's current domicile, and resource consumption via renovation (watch all the stuff that gets torn out or thrown away.) Gardening, on the other hand, promotes so many good things - beauty, psychologically beneficial aesthetic environment, outdoor activity and exercise, environmental awareness and health, etc. Someone should pitch the CBC/CTV/CRTC etc. with a new show that taps into a burgeoning audience (all those books on "Boomers" and the economy keep mentioning gardening.)

I have been reading with great interest all the comments from everyone and it seems we could be a force to be reckoned with. I would suggest we compile a list of email addresses, e.g HGTV CRTC ETC, and together set a date and everyone send an email on the same date so that it will be a huge deluge of mail to be dealt with. We as gardeners could really get together with all our gardening friends around the country,that don't ( for some reason see this website) and make them aware of it, and what we are trying to do. Hey!it's worth a try, I work and so can't watch early in the morning and have to admit I am useless at setting the VCR or anything else like it, so that is not an option for me.It's been a long winter without my Saturday afternoon fix of hrs of Gardening.

really huge.
