Does anyone know what plant this is: This perennial loves to keep it's feet wet as it grows naturally in bogs and streamsides. It has pinkish red flowers borne on burgundy stems. It grows to a height of 1.2 meters and a spread of 60 cm. Good for zones 4-9. Carol

Purple loosestrife? (I'm not sure if the stems are burgundy though.) If the flowers were just red, maybe Cardinal Flower?

I don't think it is any of those, the flower kind of looks like sedum "Autumn Joy".

It sounds like you have a description and a picture- is there a name of any kind? Are you looking at a catalog of some sort? Off hand, I can't think of anything that brings the sedum image to mind....

OK - I got my Gardening Life magazine today.... I think it's a Filipendula rubra - compare with the picture at:

It can grow taller than 4 feet though...but the leaves look very similar to the out-of-focus ones in their picture...

Carol I think it is probably "Joe Pye Weed" it grows wild where I live and is really quite nice and the flower heads sort of resemble Autumn Joy Sedums but Autumn Joy does not grow as tall.

Tonylyn - I think yours is the better suggestion - I think my Joe Pye Weed has the burgundy stems while my Filipendula is more green. Both of them grow more than the 4 feet though.

For comparison, there's a picture of Joe Pye Weed at:

Hi Toylyn and Susan I think the Joe Pye Weed is the right one too, I have been looking through my books and magazines to identify it, and that is the one that seems to fit the discription best. Thanks for helping... Carol
