Carmela,Where is your Bougainvillea now and what is it doing? Is it flowering? Is it growing runners? How big is it? Where do you keep it in the winter? And summer?

Hello crocus....I no longer own a Bougainvillea, I sold it when I moved out of my house last year (that had a sunroom). I want to purchase a new one. I kept my Bougainvillea in the sunroom, where it received lots of sun, it was growing runners and it grew to be very large. In the winter it stayed in the sunroom and in the summer I dragged it outdoors. It was very healthy looking and large BUT it produced very few flowers. Thats the problem, I want to know how I can get it to produce alot of flowers. Years before I had seen one that was covered with beautiful flowers. Before I purchase a new one, I want to know how to get it to produce lots of flowers and also I just want to know more about the general care of this plant.

Carmela. Here is my show down on Bougainvillea's: Never transplant to an other pot which is more than one size larger, the roots are very tender so be care full when transplanting. Outside in the summer in full sun loves the heat, this is the growing season for the plant so water and fertilize regular with a 15-30-15 fertilizer(I use this at half the recommended strength)every time you water the plant. When grown in a pot water from the bottom. Before taking it in for the winter, cover the plant with a plastic bag and spray the plant inside the bag with insecticidal soap to kill possible spidermites, when yo do this don't leave the plant in the sun. Trim the plant back by almost two thirds, yes even the branches with the flower brackts on it. When inside only water the plant when the soil feels dry. In early March slowly start to increase the watering and by about mid March start to add fertilizer to your water, you can pinch the new runners back if you want to,this will give you more side shoots but delays the flowering, these shrubs flower on new growth.
