How-To Tips from The Do-It-Yourself

Where’s the Leek?

I think it’s so much fun to combine fruits and vegetables with flowers. This type of arrangement can be created using all sorts of produce items such as asparagus, rhubarb, celery, scallions, even carrots. But here I’ve used 8 or 9 gorgeous leeks and a pickle jar. The tops of the leeks were trimmed to a uniform height, then I split them in half lengthwise. Just insert the halves into a rubber band encircling the pickle jar, disguise the rubber band with ribbon or raffia, and you have a fantastic, custom floral container. My flowers consist of three shades of roses and buttery yellow stock to compliment the colors in the leeks. Of course, you could add whatever you choose, even an array of mixed garden flowers.
