Centennial Tea & Garden Tours

at The Fairmont Royal York
by Press Release
July 15, 2007

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” – Henry James (1843-1976), Portrait of a Lady

During Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ Centennial year The Fairmont Royal York is celebrating its elegant heritage and its green future. Starting May 28, 2007, The Fairmont Royal York invites guests to enjoy afternoon tea in EPIC Restaurant accompanied by a complimentary tour (weather permitting) of the hotel’s rooftop herb garden every Monday to Friday at 2:30 pm until September 30, 2007.

The herb garden, situated 200 feet above ground and 18 stories high is normally closed to the public. The garden will now be accessible to the general public for the first time in its nine year history. With a magnificent view of the CN Tower and the lakefront, the garden positions itself as a stark contrast to its neighbouring office towers. The herb garden is the only one of its kind in Toronto and serves as an extension of the hotel’s environmental program. This unique garden provides the herbs needed for the dishes served in the hotel’s restaurants.

After the thirty-minute rooftop tour, guests can enjoy a pot of tea and a variety of sweet and savory treats. Teas available at EPIC include the Commemorative Centennial Blend Tea, Kenmare Ceylon, Maple and Egyptian Chamomile. The Centennial Blend Tea is a luxurious, loose-leaf mix made from sources authentic to the year the Fairmont brand was born. The tea menu features toasted crumpets with Grand Marnier butter, traditional finger sandwiches including a baby shrimp salad with rooftop garden herbs, scones with Devonshire cream and jam, as well as a selection of French pastries and English tea cakes.

The meeting point for the half-hour herb garden tour is at EPIC Restaurant at 2:30 pm every Monday to Friday and is followed by Tea service at 3:15 pm. The complimentary tours begin May 28 and will run until September 30, 2007. The limited edition Commemorative Centennial Tea may also be purchased at The Fairmont Store located in the hotel lobby. Tea and complimentary garden tours may be reserved by contacting EPIC Restaurant at (416) 860-6949.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts are proud of their herbs, grown organically without herbicides or pesticides. The herbs allow the chefs to play an interactive role in each meal prepared. They are involved from the planting of the seeds to the garnishing of the plate. At The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, herbs are used in spa treatments such as baths and facials. The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston and The Fairmont Washington, D.C. are in the process of adding their own gardens. In addition, five other Fairmont properties house herb gardens of their own.
