In many parts of the world, gardening is a favourite past time. For gardening enthusiasts, it produces vegetables and fruits, sweet-smelling flowers and beautiful plants.

Gardening as a hobby is exciting too but it comes with its own set of challenges. There are a lot of learning curves to pass through, especially if you are just beginning. At the end of the day though, the gardening offers many rewards. It reduces the cost of groceries, adds to curb appeal and provides you with vegetables, and is also a great form of exercise among other things.

Now you may be sceptical about the idea of gardening as an exercise but until you pick up a trawler and begin to work you will never be sold. Scientists are slowly coming to the knowledge of what avid gardeners have always known - trimming hedges, spreading mulch and battling stubborn weeds is a good way to get in a workout. Active gardening also has many emotional and mental benefits.

What are the benefits of gardening?

  • Gardening (heavy gardening) is a great way to maintain weight and as a bonus, it reduces the risk of heart disease and other terminal diseases.
  • Scientists have found that gardening can lower the risk of dementia by about 36%.
  • Gardening is a fun activity that every member of the family can enjoy. It is a good way to get your family members away from televisions, computers and electronics screens unto the outdoors.
  • Gardening can be a relaxing activity.

Six Tips To Help You Create A Lush Garden

Consult an expert

If you are uncertain, to begin with, getting the help of a trained professional to guide you is a great idea. When you get the services of experts, they can take you through all the important steps to a rewarding and enjoyable gardening experience.

Choose a location

Before you begin gardening, you would first need to settle on and prepare a spot for your garden. If you do not have enough space in your backyard, then an alternative is to do container gardening. Container gardening is especially good for the beginner gardener who would like to start small before advancing to a larger garden.

Time planting season

Before you begin, it's important that you note that some plants are seasonal. To get the most out of your gardening experience, you would have to plant the right plants at the right time. You can conduct research on plants that grow in every season, and don't forget to check if they would grow well where you live.

Understand the type of soil

There are various types of soils (loamy, clay, sandy and so on) and plants grow differently in each. Have your soil tested to confirm the type, nutrient content and the type of fertiliser that would work with it. In addition, understanding organic matter, pH level, nutrient levels and so on are important because they determine how your crops grow.

Go organic

Especially if you are growing plants in a small space, you should try organic gardening methods - organic pest control methods, organic watering methods, using organic fertilisers and so on. As a bonus, you get better tasting and healthier crops because organic crops are better than the mainstream versions. Mainstream and chemically treated crops are susceptible to diseases and pests.

Involve the kids

This might seem like an odd choice to include in this list but If you have children, gardening is a great way to get them involved in the outdoors. There is so much that they can learn with this activity - you can use it as a time to drive home the importance of eating healthy or getting them to get more exercise. They will also learn about responsibility, consistency, patience and the value of hard work.

Watering

In order for your crops to grow, water is an essential requirement. There is a fine line between not giving your crops enough water and giving too much. If your soil is waterlogged, it will cause your crops to begin decomposing -- leaves begin turning yellow (this is often a sign that plans are getting too much water.)

The amount of water your plants need per day would depend on climate and the species of plants your garden. Run some research to find out how much watering you should be doing a day and the quantity. And if you are still confused, consider getting the help of a gardening expert.
