Garden Club & the Kumquat Campaign
re-released in 2004!

Warm and satisfying, like sitting outside on that first evening in summer, Des Kennedy's novel The Garden Club and the Kumquat Campaignis being reprinted with a new introduction. The book, originally published in 1996, was nominated for a Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. The Garden Clubtakes us to Upshot Island, a fictitious locale off British Columbia's coast. There, the local garden club is attempting to stop the logging of the Kumquat Sound rain forest. Instead of running like an average protest, the main character, Joseph Jones must wade through the outrageous current of UFOs, frog clairvoyance, and colourful denizens. Upshot residents like the ornery Waddy Watts, the freespirited Caitlyn, and salt-of-the-earth Elvira Stone all give The Garden Cluba convivial, funny, and familiar tone. Des Kennedy, a well-known gardening writer and former monk, teacher and social worker, has been writing for over twenty years. Some of his other books include Living Things We Love to Hate (1-55285-339-X) and Crazy About Gardening(1-55110-137-8). His vivid descriptions of the plants in the coastal region breathe life into The Garden Club and the Kumquat Campaign, his first novel, which is Whitecap's only work of fiction for adults.
