Subject: controlling height of crab apple tree From: Zone: 3 Date: 04-Dec-07 09:28 PM EST
I have a crab apple tree that has about six main branches but no leader. It is now nearing 20 ft. which is getting too tall for spraying and picking. How far do I trim back the branches for an effective tree of perhaps 12-15 ft.?

I was told that you can trim your crabapple branches by one third to one half. I hav e been pincing the early new growth in the early summer and pruning by at least one third in March. My tree produces a huge amount of apples.
