Thomas Leo Ogren is the author of Allergy-Free Gardening. His most recent book, Safe Sex in the Garden, was published March 2003, by Ten Speed Press. Two of his previous books, both novels, were published by New Readers Press, and are used nationwide in adult literacy programs.

Tom does consulting work for the USDA, the American Lung Association, for, and recently for county asthma coalitions. He is considered to be the leading authority on pollen-producing male cultivars, and on their opposites: pollen-free female plants. He is currently working on a book about lawns, for AOL Time Warner Books.

Tom and his wife, Yvonne, have four children. They live in San Luis Obispo, California.

1pt.gif (86 bytes)Mr. Ogren has a diverse background and has held many different jobs, including horticulture teacher in Watts, community gardening organizer for Cooperative Extension, brakeman on the Santa Fe Railroad, dairy farmer, landscaper, nursery owner, and free lance writer.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)Tom has an AA degree from Compton College, a BA degree in Sociology from Chico State, and an MS degree in Agriculture/ Horticulture from Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)For a dozen years he was the landscape-gardening teacher at the California Youth Authority in Paso Robles, where he started the existing two- man program from scratch, and wrote the curriculum currently used curriculum for the CYA statewide. At the CYA he used gardening to teach many boys to read, to write, to speak correct English, to do math, and especially to love to garden. Many of his ex students keep in touch with him and some of them are now college graduates themselves.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)Tom writes for many magazines, websites, and newspapers, and has been published in, among others, Garden Design, American Rose,, Alternative Medicine, the New Scientist, Der Spiegel, the London Times, the Seattle Times, the Boston Globe, and the Chicago Tribune.
1pt.gif (86 bytes)He is a consultant on plant flowering -systems, allergy and landscape plants, for both the USDA Department of Forestry and for the American Lung Association. His favorite hobbies are: reading, writing, fishing, rock hounding, hybridizing roses, camping, and gardening.
