It was during a heavy snowfall that Marion Owen was first introduced to gardening and plant care. Armed with a broomstick, she was told to go outside and tap the bamboo stalks, which were loaded with snow and bent over to the ground. "Whack," went the broom stick. "Ploomph" went the snow off the bamboo (as they sprang back to vertical) and dumped the load down her back!

Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, in the northwest corner of the U.S., Marion spent eight years at sea as a seaman and merchant marine officer. Then, in 1984, she found a home ashore in Kodiak, Alaska. Switching her focus to the land, Marion became a master gardener and passionate organic gardener. Now she has 20 raised beds filled with flowers, vegetables and herbs--a teaching garden, where visitors can explore and learn.
